Wannstedt Signs 2 Year Contract Extension
Mar 30th
Dave Wannstedt, head coach of the Panthers Football team, signed a contract extension (2 years), which extends his contract out to the end of the 2014 season.
Wannstedt is entering his sixth year as head coach of the Panthers. After last year’s 10 win season, we’re happy to see Wanny sign an extension. He’s stated that this will be his last job. It’s great to see a guy with his commitment to the University leading the Panthers.

Pitt’s Successful Signing Day Brings in 24 Talented Players
Feb 4th
Yesterday, Pitt announced that it signed 24 recruits for its 2010 football recruiting class. The class is considered very successful by many analysts. Scouts.com lists the Panthers’ 2010 recruiting class as the 15th best in the nation.
Pitt signed all 24 players that it had expected to sign, leaving Coach Wannstedt and crew very relaxed for the majority of the day. The only bit of worry came from top recruit T.J. Clemmings (DL, New Jersey), but was quickly forgotten after he faxed his letter to Pitt shortly before 10 AM. Clemmings was considered to be the top overall prospect from the state of New Jersey.
The recruiting class addressed Pitt’s needs at the defensive back position as well as the defensive line position. It also brings in top Ohio QB recruit, Mark Myers, and PA QB recruit Anthony Gonzalez.
2010 Recruiting Class by Position
Offensive Linemen – 4 (Arthur Doakes, Shane Johnson, Matt Rotheram, Brandon Sacco)
Defensive Linemen – 4 (T.J. Clemmings, Aaron Donald, Khaynin Mosley-Smith, Bryan Murphy)
Wide Receivers – 4 (Drew Carswell, Todd Thomas, Kevin Weatherspoon, Salath Williams)
Defensive Backs – 6 (Derrick Burns, Brandon Ifill, Saheed Imoru, Jeff Knox, Todd Thomas, K’Waun Williams)
Running Backs – 2 (Andre Givens, T.J. Peeler)
Quarterbacks – 2 (Anthony Gonzalez, Mark Myers)
Tight Ends – 2 (Brendan Carozzoni, Dan Schneider)
Linebackers – 1 (Eric Williams)Source: PittsburghPanthers.com
Overall, it marks another successful recruiting class for head coach Dave Wannstedt as he continues to bring top talent into the program at Pitt.
Pitt Focusing on Cincinnati
Dec 1st
There’s no doubt in any Pitt fan’s mind that Friday’s game was a bit of a disappointment. Losing in the Backyard Brawl is always a blow to any Pitt fan. But the Panthers can’t afford to dwell on the past right now. With what is probably their biggest game since 2004 coming up this Saturday, Pitt needs to focus on one thing: How to prepare for Cincinnati. According to Coach Wannstedt, that’s exactly what they’re doing.
“We obviously have to take care of our business to make sure that we are prepared to go out and play the best game that we’ve played all season.”
– Dave Wannstedt
In his press conference yesterday afternoon, Coach Wannstedt addressed the upcoming season finale against the Cincinnati Bearcats, who are undefeated this year at 11-0. Refusing to say much about the WVU game other than a quick comment about how Pitt came up short in critical situations, Wannstedt made it clear that Pitt understands what they need to do this week. They need to prepare as best as possible on the practice field and in the meeting rooms. Pitt is well aware of the talent that the Bearcats have. Even better, Pitt respects the caliber of their upcoming opponent. They understand that they need to play the best game of their season this Saturday to beat Cincinnati. In order to do that, they need to prepare as much as possible this week, and then simply play like they know they can on Saturday.
“We just have to make sure that we handle our preparation in the correct way — Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday — and don’t get ahead of ourselves. Saturday will be a big day. [...] There were only two or three little things that I talked about with the team. This is the plan. This is what we all need to do. If we do these the next few days, we’ll be ready to play Saturday. Then Saturday we need to go out and find a way to play our best football game. We’ve talked all year that we want to play our best game the last game. It’s going to take that type of effort and execution. [...] To beat a team like Cincinnati, you need to play well as a team in all three phases. That’s what we expect to do.”
– Dave Wannstedt
And make no mistakes, Pitt understands that Cincinnati will be at their best come Saturday as well. Afterall, the Bearcats have had all season to improve just as Pitt has. Cincinnati has seen the tapes and is no doubt analyzing Pitt in detail. Last year, it was the Bearcats who won the River City Rivalry game in Cincinnati by a score of 28-21. Quarterback Tony Pike is a returning starter. Mardy Gilyard is a senior playmaker as well. These guys are leaders that want to complete a perfect regular season worse than anyone. With their only distant shot at a BCS Championship hanging in the balance, they need a win on Saturday.
But no matter how prepared Cincinnati will be, one fact lingers: Pitt plays well in these situations. In 2007, it was the Panthers that busted WVU’s season with an upset win in the Backyard Brawl, knocking the #2 Mountaineers out of a BCS National Championship game. This may not be the Backyard Brawl, but it’s still the River City Rivalry.
But aside from rivalries and BCS busters, Pitt’s motivation is the Big East Championship and automatic BCS Bowl bid that are on the line Saturday. That’s what this game boils down to in the end. The Panthers need this win. They want this win.
“A year ago, everybody was doing back flips because we won nine games, and rightfully so. It was the first time (Pitt had won nine regular-season games) in over a quarter century. Now we’re at nine games and we’re pressing for more. We feel that we can get more. We want more. The kids want more. The fans want more. That is all part of winning.”

Panthers Not Looking Past Syracuse
Nov 5th
The Panthers are coming off of a bye week this Saturday when they face off with Big East foe Syracuse. Syracuse is an unimpressive 0-3 in the conference (3-5 overall). Earlier this week, Syracuse’s leading wide receiver Mike Williams announced days ago that he quit the team. That news came at the same time the team announced that it had suspended players Torrey Ball, Antwon Bailey, Andrew Tiller for the game this Saturday.
With Syracuse suffering player losses on top of its already bad season, plus all of the hype for Pitt’s remaining big games against Notre Dame, WVU, and Cincinnati, it’s easy to get caught up in a scenario where the Panthers overlook Syracuse and get taken by surprise at home this Saturday.
Don’t count on it though.
Wannstedt made it clear this week that Pitt has had one point of focus since the USF game: Syracuse. When talking about Syracuse earlier this week, Wannstedt said,
“They’ve got talent. They’re well coached. Our players understand the importance of the game, being a conference game. It’s going to be very important for us to have a great week of practice. We’ve got to go out there and approach it the same way that we have every other week. Take it one day at a time. Keep our focus on the job at hand and go from there. I’m confident with the leadership we have that we will do that.”
And when asked about the toughness of Pitt’s remaining schedule, he had this to say:
“There really hasn’t been much thought or conversation about that. It’s Syracuse. We have a big conference game and we need every ounce of focus and energy for this week. Then we’ll just take the next one and continue that.”
It’s reassuring to Panther fans to hear that from Coach Wannstedt coming into this weekend. Afterall, Syracuse has historically played well against Pitt. Just last year, Pitt needed a late 11-point comeback to beat the Orange. Two years ago, at Heinz Field, Pitt narrowly escaped with a 20-17 win. And, as Wannstedt pointed out in his interview, Syracuse has the top rushing defense in the Big East (7th nationally).
Aside from discussing the toughness of playing a Big East opponent, Wannstedt also touched upon addressing problem areas. He recognized the need for the Panthers to get healthy, and discussed their improvements in avoiding dumb penalties and turnovers.
Overall, it appears that Pitt is taking advantage of the bye week and will be prepared and focused for the game against Syracuse this Saturday. Check back tomorrow for our preview of the game.

Pitt in Running for Multiple Honors
Oct 28th
The Panthers have a few people in the running for honors this football season. On Monday, Dave Wannstedt was named to the list of 20 candidates for the Paul “Bear” Bryant College Football Coach of the Year award. That very same day, starting quarterback Bill Stull was named as a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. This comes just days after Stull was named to the midseason watch list for the Manning Award. Last week, tight end Dorin Dickerson was named to the midseason John Mackey Award list.
And finally, freshman running back Dion Lewis has (unofficially) been mentioned by sportscasters as a potential candidate for the Heisman Trophy. While it’s highly unlikely Lewis would win the Heisman, it’s nice to see a Pitt star getting some notice.
The last Panther to win an award of that level was Larry Fitzgerald in 2003 (Fred Biletnikoff Award).
