Panthers in the NFL Playoffs

There were a number of former Pitt Panthers playing in the NFL Playoffs this year. We wanted to take a moment to point them out and recognize what they’ve achieved this year, and what a few of them are still hoping to achieve.

Darrelle Revis – CB – NY Jets
Revis is probably the most notable Panther in the NFL Playoffs this year. Mike_B informed me that they unofficially renamed the island of Manhattan to “Revis Island” on Thursday. The Jets will be playing for the AFC Championship this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts. Revis has made 59 tackles and intercepted the ball 8 times so far this year. He was runner-up for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award, made the Pro Bowl, and is widely considered one of the best cornerbacks in the league.

Clint Session – LB – Indianapolis Colts
Clint Session will also be playing in the AFC Championship on Sunday, although he’ll do so in a different uniform. Clint’s had a decent year so far with 107 tackles and 2 interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown.

Darnell Dinkins – TE – New Orleans Saints
Darnell Dinkins is the only other Panther left in the playoffs at this point. He’ll also be playing on Sunday, but in the NFC Championship game. So far this year, he’s only had 5 receptions for 22 yards with 1 touchdown.

Larry Fitzgerald – WR – Arizona Cardinals
Larry is another high profile Panther to play in the NFL Playoffs this year. He was a huge part of the Cardinals offense this year (109 receptions, 1251 yards, and 15 touchdowns), and helped lead them into the second round of the playoffs where they lost to the Saints. Larry also made the Pro Bowl this year, but won’t be playing in it due to a sprained right knee.

Gerald Hayes – LB – Arizona Cardinals
Gerald Hayes is yet another Panther playing for the Arizona Cardinals. He contributed 62 tackles this season, but sat out the game agains the Saints due to a sprained ankle.

LaRod Stephens-Howling – RB – Arizona Cardinals
LaRod is doing his part to make a name for himself in the NFL. He carried the ball 9 times this year, for a total of 23 yards. He also caught 13 receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown. His real accomplishments are in his special teams play. LaRod returned 52 kicks this year for a total of 1257 yards and 1 touchdown.

Kris Wilson – TE – San Diego Chargers
Kris Wilson made it into the second round of the playoffs with the Chargers. Wilson isn’t a huge part of the Chargers offense, but still racked up 5 receptions this year for 41 yards and 2 touchdowns.

LeSean McCoy – Philadelphia Eagles
Shady is probably the newest NFL Panther on the minds of Pitt fans. The Eagles, ever-fearful of actually winning a Super Bowl, didn’t last long in the playoffs this year. They were knocked out in the first round by Dallas. Still, Shady had a decent year with 160 carries for 661 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also accumulated 41 receptions for 317 yards. Even with all of that action, he only fumbled twice with only one of those fumbles resulting in a turnover.

Good luck to Revis, Session, and Dinkins this weekend as they continue their run in the playoffs.

Hail to Pitt!

Pitt in Running for Multiple Honors

The Panthers have a few people in the running for honors this football season. On Monday, Dave Wannstedt was named to the list of 20 candidates for the Paul “Bear” Bryant College Football Coach of the Year award. That very same day, starting quarterback Bill Stull was named as a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. This comes just days after Stull was named to the midseason watch list for the Manning Award. Last week, tight end Dorin Dickerson was named to the midseason John Mackey Award list.

And finally, freshman running back Dion Lewis has (unofficially) been mentioned by sportscasters as a potential candidate for the Heisman Trophy. While it’s highly unlikely Lewis would win the Heisman, it’s nice to see a Pitt star getting some notice.

The last Panther to win an award of that level was Larry Fitzgerald in 2003 (Fred Biletnikoff Award).
