Tournament Update: Semifinals

So yesterday the quarterfinal round turned out to be a day of upsets in the Big East. Top seed Syracuse lost to Georgetown, Villanova lost to Marquette, and Pitt lost to Notre Dame. WVU was the only top seed team to win yesterday with their buzzer-beater win over Cincinnati.

Pitt’s game against Notre Dame was a defensive battle as Notre Dame did their best to keep the score low all game. The Irish used the shot clock to play to their advantage all game. In the end it payed off as their defense held the Panthers to just 45 points. Notre Dame has now defeated Pitt in two games this season. The Panthers will try to move on from this loss and prepare for the NCAA tournament.

The semifinal games will take place tonight in the Garden. Georgetown vs. Marquette will be on ESPN at 7 PM and Notre Dame will take on WVU at 9 PM also on ESPN.

Here’s a look at the brackets:

Tournament Update: Notre Dame defeats Seton Hall

Pitt will play Notre Dame tomorrow at 7 PM (ESPN). The Irish beat Seton Hall by a score of 68-56 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Cincinnati vs. Louisville is the last game yet to be played in the second round. It’s set to tip off at 9:23 PM and can be seen on ESPN.

Pitt Announces Non-Conference Games Schedule Through 2013

Just yesterday, Pitt announced their non-conference schedule through 2013. There will be some interesting games in the coming years.

2010

Sept. 4: New Hampshire
Sept. 11: at Utah
Sept. 25: Miami
Oct. 2: Florida International
Oct. 9: at Notre Dame

Source: ESPN.com

While New Hampshire and Florida International are two weak games, the three other games are pretty strong. Utah, Miami, and Notre Dame all bring with them a strong presence in the BCS. This will be the first time Pitt gets to play Utah since the disappointment of the Fiesta Bowl back in 2005. It will aslo be the first time, barring a bowl game between the two, that they will play Miami since they moved to the ACC.

2011

Sept. 3: Buffalo
Sept. 10: Maine
Sept. 17: at Iowa
Sept. 24: Notre Dame
Oct. 15: Utah

Source ESPN.com

Buffalo and Maine are the two weak games on this schedule, but a game at Iowa will be very tough. Pitt gets Notre Dame and Utah at home in this year.

2012

Sept. 1: TBA
Sept. 8: Central Florida
Sept. 15: Virginia Tech
Oct. 6: at Buffalo
Nov. 3 at Notre Dame

Source: ESPN.com

Look for that TBA game to be against a FCS opponent, unless Pitt gets invited to play in the Chick-Fil-A kickoff game. This doesn’t seem like a strong non-conference schedule, but the game with Virginia Tech will be interesting.

2013

Aug. 31: Villanova
Sept. 14: at Virginia Tech
Sept. 21: NC State
Oct. 26: Navy
Nov. 9: Notre Dame

Source: ESPN.com

It is hard to predict how these teams will be in 5 years, but Notre Dame will still be Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech will still be a top school.

I really like what Pitt did with their schedule. Hopefully the Big East plays better in the coming years. With these schedules, 1 FCS team, 1 sub-par FBS team, 1 good FBS team, and 2 great FBS teams, Pitt can really line themselves up for a chance at the National Title, or at least some big time exposure.

Bye Week Blues: What We’re Watching this Weekend

With our #8 ranked Panthers in their second bye week of the season, there’s no Pitt football game to get hyped up about this weekend. The Men’s Basketball team doesn’t play again until Monday. But that doesn’t mean it’ll be a boring weekend. There’s plenty of stuff to entertain yourself with this weekend and we’ll be taking advantage of quite a bit of it. We’re going to fill you in on what The Pitt Blog writers will be entertaining themselves with this weekend in the absence of a Pitt football matchup.

Mike_B:

Friday:
#24 Syracuse at #4 North Carolina in the Coaches vs. Cancer Championship game, 7:00 PM ESPN2. – A great early season game seeing two ranked teams play against each other. Syracuse just beat California handedly and North Carolina just narrowly escaped Ohio State.

The League (DVR) – This FX show shows what really happens in fantasy football and provides great humor to both those who play fantasy football and those who have no idea what fantasy football is.

The Office (DVR) – Where will Dunder Mifflin go after the rumors of bankruptcy?

Pittsburgh Light Up Night (Live In Person) – Events start at 5:45 PM tonight and go until 10:00 PM. There are various events including concerts, tree lighting, and a firework display.

Saturday:
#10 Ohio State at Michigan, 12:00 PM ABC – This classic college football rivalry is the last game either one of these Big Ten teams will see until the bowl games. Michigan needs a win and a miracle to make a bowl. Ohio State just wants to beat their rival, as they’ve already clinched their BCS Bowl berth.

UConn at Notre Dame, 2:30 PM NBC – This is a game that every Big East fan should be watching. If UConn wins, it might just be enough to eliminate Notre Dame from the Gator Bowl and just might allow UConn to get into a bowl game. Notre Dame is reeling after two straight losses and Charlie Weis’ job is on the line.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Atlanta Thrashers, 7:00 PM FSN Pittsburgh – The Pens take back to the ice against the Thrashers. Can they rebound after the disappointment against Ottawa? Brooks Orpik is due to return during this road trip.

Ortiz-Griffin 2, 10 PM PPV – This rematch was supposed to be on the same card as Lesnar-Carwin, but due to Lesnar’s illness this fight was moved to the main event. The first fight between the two was a classic with Ortiz dealing Griffin his first UFC loss. Griffin looks to get back in the title picture by ruining The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’s return to the octagon.

Sunday:
Pittsburgh Steelers at Kansas City Chiefs, 1:00 PM CBS – The Steelers look to rebound after the loss to the Bengals against the Chiefs. The Chiefs have a new running back in Jamaal Charles and is coached by Todd Haley, Arizona’s Offensive Coordinator last year.

New York Jets at New England Patriots, 4:15 PM CBS – Can the Jets complete the sweep of the Patriots or will Bill Belicheat find his way to gamble and win unlike last week against the Colts? Pitt alum Darrelle Revis covers Randy Moss.

WWE Survivor Series, 8:00 PM PPV – One of the original WWE PPVs, a classic amongst fans will be the team elimination matches.

Dan_P:

Friday:
#24 Syracuse at #4 North Carolina in the Coaches vs. Cancer Championship game, 7:00 PM ESPN2. – See above.

Nash Bridges (DVD) – Yeah you read that correctly. You don’t like Don Johnson and Cheech Marin? What’s wrong with you? I know it’s been off the air since 2001. I’ve just made it my personal mission to eventually watch the entire series from start to finish. Seeing as I have bronchitis and won’t be out this weekend, it’s a perfect chance to make up on some lost episodes.

Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360) – Ok so I’ll be playing it rather than “watching” it, but it still counts. I’ll be on Xbox Live for anyone that wants a lesson in the art of Modern Warfare. Gamertag: PpAzZ

Saturday:
Louisville at USF, 12:00 PM ESPN360.com – As weak as it may be, I can’t resist a Big East game. It’s just too bad that I’ll have to watch it on a computer screen, which means the Ohio State-Michigan game will be on the big TV in the background.

UConn at Notre Dame, 2:30 PM NBC – See above. Go Huskies!

Pittsburgh Penguins at Atlanta Thrashers, 7:00 PM FSN Pittsburgh – See above.

Assasin’s Creed 2 and Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360) – I’ll be catching up on some gaming throughout the day. See above for my gamertag.

Sunday:
Pittsburgh Steelers at Kansas City Chiefs, 1:00 PM CBS – Here we go Steelers, here we go!

New York Jets at New England Patriots, 4:15 PM CBS – See above.

Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears, 8:20 PM ABC – While it’s not a particularly interesting game as far as I’m concerned, it’s football. Plus, it’s always nice to see former Panthers in the NFL. We get to see LeSean McCoy doing his thing for the Eagles. I’ll take it.

There you have it Panther fans. Feel free to let us know what you’re doing with the bye week.

Of course, we’re still getting hyped up for next week’s game in Morgantown. We’re just seven days away from the Backyard Brawl with WVU. Tickets are still available! Get a move on it!

Heinz Field and Attendance

Last night’s game packed Heinz Field for the first time since the Panthers played WVU last year (obviously referring to Pitt games only). For a team that struggles to put fans in the seats, it was a nice change of scenery.

Notre Dame always brings a big crowd to Heinz Field. Granted, a decent chunk of the crowd belongs to Notre Dame fans, it’s still nice to see the Panthers selling tickets. WVU seems to be one of the only other teams that brings in a huge crowd, and it’s fairly obvious why.

So why doesn’t Pitt pack Heinz Field? Well I’m sure a lot of people blame the first couple of seasons under Wannstedt. The Panthers struggled until the end of the 2007 season. But ever since the 13-9 win over #2 WVU in 2007, Pitt has gone 18-4 in the regular season. That’s a home field record of 10-2 in the past two seasons. Obviously Pitt has a good team again. They’re winning games and headed towards their second bowl game in a row, perhaps even a BCS bowl. Why shouldn’t Pitt pack Heinz Field?

Another excuse that I hear a lot has to do with Heinz Field. People claim that the students simply don’t want to travel away from the campus to attend the games. Well Pitt offers free shuttle service for the students. I can’t help but call “BS” on this excuse. College students can be lazy, but I find it hard to believe that they’re so lazy that they can’t catch a free shuttle bus and spend an extra 15 minutes getting to the stadium.

Ticket prices are reasonable. Students pay just a small fee. Regular season tickets are cheaper than a lot of other similar schools. So it can’t be the cost. Parking is abundant. You’re not parking somewhere in a dark alley in South Oakland and walking a mile uphill anymore. Traffic isn’t too bad with major highways leading to Heinz Field. You’re not fighting up and down Forbes and Fifth with thousands of cars. So what is it?

I really can’t tell anymore. One theory seems to be that Pittsburgh is definitely a football town… but a Steelers football town. I guess I could see that. But if you’re really a football fan, don’t you enjoy watching college ball just as much? Wouldn’t you jump at the chance to attend a ranked top 25 team’s home games? Another theory is Pitt’s record through the 90′s. Pitt dropped from greatness after the late 70′s and early 80′s. They struggled through the 90′s. Walt Harris seemed to turn the program around in his time here. Wannstedt took over and, while it’s taken a few years, seems to have the program headed in the right direction. So if it was the 90′s, then when do we get past that era?

Whatever the reasons, hopefully this season marks a turnaround in Pitt attendance. The atmosphere last night was electric. The fans were plentiful and engaged. The stadium was packed until the end. Of course, a close finish like last night’s game will help with that aspect. But let’s hope that Pitt finishes out this season in strong fashion. The Panthers could use a big post-season bowl game.

No matter what the finish, I think the Panthers have already made their case. They have loads of young talent and it seems that this team is only going to get better. Hopefully the promise of more seasons like this one will help sell more season tickets next year.

Heinz Field last night between the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Game Recap: No Luck for the Irish

Our number 8 ranked Pitt Panthers continued their excellent season last night with a win over Notre Dame at Heinz Field. The Panthers overcame a slow start and held off a late Notre Dame rally to put a 27-22 win in the books. With the win, the Panthers improved to 9-1 overall. Notre Dame, of course, is not a Big East opponent, so last night’s win has no effect on the Big East race. Still, the Panthers sit at 5-0 in the conference, and with Cincinnati’s win over WVU on Friday, are tied for first place in the Big East.

Last night’s game started a bit slower than expected. Notre Dame scored just 3 points in the first half, while Pitt scored just 10 including a touchdown off of a spectacular Jonathan Baldwin 36 yard catch in the second quarter. Pitt came out looking more like themselves in the second half as they put up another field goal followed by a touchdown after another highlight-worthy 53 yard run by Ray Graham.

Notre Dame finally came alive in the fourth quarter scoring off of a 1 yard run by Jimmy Clausen at the beginning of the quarter. After a blocked extra point, Pitt answered on the next drive with a nice drive down the field capped off by a 50 yard touchdown run by Dion Lewis. But Notre Dame refused to die. They answered with their own drive down the field ending with an 18 yard touchdown reception by Golden Tate. The Irish would kick the extra point this time.

On the following drive, Pitt stalled and punted to Notre Dame. In typical late-game form, Golden Tate returned the punt 87 yards for a touchdown. Pitt stuffed the two point conversion attempt.

Notre Dame would force Pitt to punt on the following drive, giving themselves one more chance. The Irish would eventually find themselves in a 3rd and 16 situation after a 15 yard personal foul. On their final offensive play, Jimmy Clausen fumbled and Pitt recovered. The Panthers ran the clock out and walked away with their second straight victory over Notre Dame.

Last night’s game was certainly not what many of us expected. While we expected to see Notre Dame give Pitt a decent game, no one expected the first half that we saw last night. Until the fourth quarter, I was simply underwhelmed by Notre Dame’s offense. Pitt played pretty solid defense up until the fourth. As expected, it was the secondary that looked most suspect. They played soft and seemed to give up the short throws to the Irish without a second look.

Pitt, on the other hand, looked like they were on the verge of breaking loose all game. Baldwin’s catch in the second quarter was spectacular. It was the kind of play that everyone had expected from the offense coming into this game.

As much as the first half wasn’t what was expected, the second half was. Pitt’s offense looked more like what everyone had expected. Ray Graham broke a big run. Dion Lewis broke a huge run as well. Pitt put up 27 points overall, just a touchdown short of my prediction.

Notre Dame, on the other hand, didn’t find their groove until the end of the third quarter. They scored their first touchdown in the fourth. But in typical Notre Dame fashion, the Irish fought till the end, forcing Pitt to make a late game stand. It was the kind of determination you expect from the team and players like Clausen and Tate.

Overall, the win is good news for Pitt. Obviously everyone wants the “W” on the record. But this win helps the Big East as well. Notre Dame is on the verge of securing an invite to the Gator Bowl, an invite that would replace the Big East runner up. The conference needed Pitt to beat the Irish. They also need the Irish to drop at least one more of their remaining games. Seeing as the Irish play UConn, a Big East team that’s been close to winning in quite a few of its losses this year, and Stanford, a top 25 team that demolished USC yesterday, it’s quite possible that the Irish lose one, or both games. A 6-6 Notre Dame team is officially ineligible for the Gator Bowl. A 7-5 Notre Dame team is a tough pick for the Gator Bowl, especially if a 10-2 Big East team is available.

At any rate, while it wasn’t exactly the offensive shootout that was expected, the game spotlighted the Panthers. A national TV audience got to see all of Pitt’s talent last night. Between Ray Graham, Dion Lewis, Jonathan Baldwin, and Bill Stull, the audience was treated to spectacular offensive play by Pitt. Pitt’s defense was strong through three quarters. It showed college football nation that Pitt can play a little defense in addition to being able to put up points.

Hopefully the nation finally sees that Pitt is a team to be taken seriously, and the Big East isn’t as weak as everyone thought coming into this season.

Preview: Notre Dame vs. Pitt

Notre Dame comes to town this weekend for the Saturday night nationally-televised matchup against our own Panthers. As we’re sure the Pitt faithful already know, the game starts at 8:00 PM and will be televised on ABC.

Notre Dame comes into this game looking for redemption after last weekend’s loss to Navy. At 6-3 this season, Notre Dame has virtually knocked themselves out of the running for a BCS bowl, as well as endangered their possible invitation to the Gator Bowl.

On the other hand, Pitt comes into this game on a roll. The Panthers are on a 5 game winning streak and are 8-1 overall. They’re having their best season since 1981. Ranked 8th in the AP Poll, the Panthers are a contender for the Big East Championship this year.

So what do we expect from this game? Read on to hear our predictions for the game.

Dan_P:

Last week’s win against Syracuse didn’t exactly come as I had expected, but the score was pretty close to my prediction. I predicted a 38-10 Panthers win and instead got a 37-10 win. But the Panthers didn’t really come out as prepared as I had expected. They struggled in the first half, especially during the first quarter. The defense looked sloppy, special teams were atrocious, and Pitt just looked rusty. In the end, Pitt came together and, sparked by an interception and touchdown by Greg Williams, rolled over Syracuse.

Hopefully the Panthers got all of the kinks worked out last week. I’d imagine they addressed the problems on special teams this week during practice. They’re well aware of the offensive power of Notre Dame, as they should be. If the defense comes out unprepared this week, Notre Dame will jump on that opportunity and quickly make them pay for it. Pitt needs to come out playing their top game from the opening kickoff.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Pitt is the better team. The question is: Will they play like it? I think they will. Pitt knows that this game has no effect on the Big East race. They also know that it can affect the Big East’s chances of getting its second place team into the Gator Bowl. More importantly, they know that there are going to be a lot of people across the nation watching this game. This is a golden opportunity for the Panthers to shine in the spotlight and perhaps put to rest some of the criticism of the Big East Conference.

Look for the Panthers to be prepared and fired up for this game. Nothing excites the team more than playing a nationally televised, night time game in front of the home crowd. Heinz Field will be packed and the crowd will be loud. I get chills even thinking about what “Sweet Caroline” is going to sound like tomorrow night. I say Pitt comes out sharp, prepared, and focused. Just as they know Notre Dame has power, they know Notre Dame has weaknesses. Don’t think for a second that Pitt didn’t closely examine the Navy-Notre Dame game last weekend. Remember that it was the same Navy team that Pitt handed a 27-14 loss to earlier this year at Heinz Field. This team knows that they can beat Notre Dame, and they know how to do it.

Prediction: 34-27, Pitt

Mike_B

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of “America’s Darling” Notre Dame. They get to live off their name. They live off their tradition. But here’s the deal: They really aren’t that good. Let me rephrase that, their offense is very good, some of the best you’ll see throughout the nation. Jimmy Clausen, Golden Tate, and Michael Floyd are all players that you’ll see playing on Sundays. But their defense is putrid. They were run all over by Navy last week. And while they never had to punt, they still lost because of turnovers. I don’t doubt Clausen, Tate, or Floyd and their abilities, but I do doubt their head coach Charlie Weis. I doubt their defense. Notre Dame has barely escaped with their victories. Then again, they have barely missed victories in their defeats as well.

Pitt’s defense will really need to step up this weekend. Clausen will be the best quarterback they see all year. Tate and Floyd will be two of the best receivers they see all year. One key to victory for the Panthers will be getting pressure on Clausen. If they can do that and rattle him a bit, it will not give him the chance to go deep to Tate. Notre Dame will put up their fair share of points because their offense is just that good.

This will be an offensive game and that’s where Pitt will win it. Notre Dame is a pass heavy team. Pitt is more balanced and I think Notre Dame won’t be able to stop Dion Lewis. Pitt needs to ram the ball down Notre Dame’s throat to set the tone of this game: a smash mouth, hard hitting game. Get the run going and then let Bill Stull do what he has been doing best all year, the play action pass. Look for Jonathan Baldwin and Dorin Dickerson to have big games.

Panther fans, I ask you, please be ready for tomorrow night. Bring your A game for cheering. If Pitt gets down, stay loud. If they go up bigger, get louder. If Stull throws an interception, don’t boo. Let him know you are behind him. Make Notre Dame and all of their fans realize we don’t give a dame how they do it in South Bend. They are in Pittsburgh and Charlie Weis won’t be saving his job with the help of the Panthers. I want to hear a “Let’s Go Pitt!” chant before the band even marches onto the field. The game is a sellout and Notre Dame fans will be there. But wear your blue, lose your voice, and cheer on your Panthers like you’ve never cheered before. All year, Panther fans, we have heard people bash us as fans for not staying through the game, not selling games out, and not being loud. Let’s make that all change tomorrow. Let college football nation realize how proud we are of our team.

There will be no “Touchdown Jesus” tomorrow folks. No, tomorrow is Pitt’s day as they move to 9-1 (5-0).

Prediction: 38-24, Pitt

Pitt and the Rankings

So my guess is that there are a lot of upset Pitt fans this Monday morning. The BCS Rankings came out yesterday and, even with all of the upsets this weekend, Pitt only moved up one spot to 12th. The Panthers did, however, move up a bit more in the AP Poll and ESPN/USA Today Poll. They are 8th and 9th, respectively, in those polls.

Before you Pitt Blog fans get too upset, remember that the BCS Rankings mean nothing to Pitt at this point. There are three things for upset fans to consider right now. First off, there’s no way that Pitt is getting into a National Championship game this year with the NC State loss on the record. Second, if Pitt wins the Big East, they’ll get the automatic BCS Bowl bid anyway. And finally, if the Panthers finish second or third in the Big East, there’s virtually no chance that they’ll get an at-large bid. Right now, all that should concern Panther fans is the possibility of winning the Big East.

That brings us to an interesting scenario. Pitt has a good chance at the Big East title this year. The Panthers have three games left: Notre Dame, WVU, and Cincinnati. The Notre Dame game could have implications when it comes to the Gator Bowl. Notre Dame’s contract with the Gator Bowl requires the Irish to finish within 2 wins of the second place Big East team to get invited. If Pitt finishes in second place in the Big East and wants to avoid going to the Meineke Car Care Bowl, they need to beat both Notre Dame and WVU, as well as have Notre Dame drop at least one more game (to either UConn or Stanford). That would put Pitt at 10-2 and Notre Dame at 7-5. Pitt would then get an invite to the Gator Bowl.

But that doesn’t mean that Pitt must win against Notre Dame. In fact, Pitt could lose both the Notre Dame game and the WVU game and still win the Big East, thereby getting an automatic bid to a BCS Bowl Game. As long as Cincinnati beats WVU, the Cincinnati vs. Pitt game on December 5th will decide the Big East Champion.

It gets a bit more confusing when you try to map out all of the possible scenarios, but the bottom line is clear: Pitt needs to beat Cincinnati. That’s what Panther fans should be most concerned with right now. A win against Notre Dame will help Pitt, but only if Pitt loses to Cincy and Notre Dame drops another game after Pitt. Even then, it only helps the Panthers get into the Gator Bowl in an unlikely scenario. Pitt’s best shot at an exciting bowl game lies in winning the Big East.

A Day of Upsets

Talk about a day of upsets football fans. Here is a look at all of them and how they affect your Panthers.

#3 Alabama beats #9 LSU
While this isn’t an upset with Bama winning, it will lower LSU in the BCS rankings allowing Pitt to move up a position in the rankings. This was the best case scenario from this game for the Panthers.

Northwestern beats #4 Iowa
This is huge, not only for the Panthers, but for the Big East as well. This allows Cincinnati to move up a rank in the BCS rankings. Also depending on how the pollsters and computers see this loss, a 7 point loss at home to an unranked team (it should be viewed poorly), Iowa has a chance of falling behind the Panthers in the polls.

Stanford beats #8 Oregon
While Oregon did lose on the road by 9, it was a loss to an unranked team. Add another rank for the Panthers to move up in the BCS rankings.

#16 Ohio State beats #11 Penn State
No matter the ranking, Panther fans usually celebrate when Penn State loses, but when Penn State gets manhandled and loses a rank to Pitt, that’s another story. It will be interesting to see how this game affects the rankings. Does Ohio State’s 17 point win on the road against a ranked team equate to more than the Panthers 27 point win at home versus an unranked team? It is very possible Ohio State leapfrogs Pitt, but Penn State will fall behind Pitt.

Oregon St beats #20 California, Nebraska beats #24 Oklahoma
Neither of these games really affect the Panthers. Both teams are ranked behind Pitt, and neither winners have played the Panthers this season.

Navy beats #22 Notre Dame
This is good and bad for the Panthers. Good because if Pitt wins next weekend and finishes 2nd in the Big East, Pitt will be going to the Gator Bowl (if they do not get a at large bid for the BCS bowl games). Notre Dame gets first crack at the Gator Bowl if they are within 2 wins of the #2 Big East team. This loss was bad for the Panthers because it ruins the chance of them beating a ranked team next week.

Well there you have it Panther fans. It was a big day of upsets and they will surely affect the Panthers in the BCS rankings. The Panthers can go up anywhere between 3 and 5 spots, depending on how the pollsters and computers see the USC narrow win over Arizona St. Pitt should be #10 in the new BCS rankings when they come out later today.

Game Recap: Syracuse vs. Pitt

Mike_B:

Everyone knew this game was going to be ugly on the scoreboard, and it was. Pitt won 37-10. The Orange’s single touchdown came off the second string defense and was assisted by 4 pass interference calls and a holding call on the Pitt defense. The scoreboard wasn’t the only ugly part this of this game. Maybe it was the bye week, maybe it was the competition, but whatever it was, Pitt did not come out looking like a high ranked team. Their defense was sloppy on the first drive, the special teams were putrid overall with only a few bright spots, and the play calling was very conservative.

The defense looked very shaky the first quarter of the game, mainly the first drive, missing tackles and falling for misdirection. But the defense shored up really nicely after the drive, allowing only one more big play after the opening drive. Surprisingly, both big plays for the Orange were rushes against what is usually a stout run defense for Pitt. The Panthers got nice pressure on the Orange all game with 6 sacks and 3 interceptions. The defense was lights out on 3rd and 4th down as the Orange were 3-13 on third down and 0-2 on fourth. Allowing only 285 yards, the defense really shined today aside from the first drive.

Chalk up another good game from Bill Stull, Dion Lewis, and Dorin Dickerson, as these three led the Panthers offense to glory once again. Stull connected with Dickerson for his 10th touchdown of the year, and Stull’s 17th. Stull went 16-23 with 225 yards while Dickerson caught 7 balls for 118 yards. Dion Lewis chalked up another great game, which will hopefully get him some more Heisman notice. Lewis eclipsed the 100 yard rushing mark yet again, rushing for 110 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown. Lewis also caught 2 passes for 42 yards, netting him 152 yards from scrimmage on the day. This is truly a statement to this kid’s skills as Syracuse was 8th nationally in run defense coming into this game, allowing only 83 yards per game. We didn’t really hear Jonathan Baldwin’s name much today, as he had only 1 reception for 5 yards and 1 rush for 61 yards. He did, however, have a nice block and dropped what could have been a touchdown. It appeared he faced single coverage most of the day and Stull just wasn’t connecting with him today.

While the offense still put up 481 yards, it seemed at times the play calling was very conservative. At the end of the first half, with 9 seconds remaining, the Panthers went for a field goal and missed instead of going for one more play. At times, it felt like Matt Cavanaugh was back calling the plays.

The special teams were abysmal today. There were a few bright spots as Dan Hutchins and Luke Briggs kicked very well, Briggs with 4 touchbacks, and Hutchins 3-4 on field goals with his miss coming from 46 yards and the open end zone. Cam Saddler had another nice return of 36 yards, but those were the lone bright spots. It seemed that on every punt, the Panther faithful were covering their eyes because it seemed like every punt was being muffed by the returners. It was so bad at one point, Aaron Smith fair caught a ball with no one around him while he could have returned it a good 10 yards. This brought out the boo birds at Heinz Field. Hutchins punted one ball straight out of the end zone instead of trying to bury the Orange deep in their own territory.

All in all, the Panthers walked out victorious improving to 8-1 overall, 5-0 in the Big East, and get to look forward to a date with Notre Dame at 8:00 PM next weekend. The game will be televised on ABC. There’s still no word yet on whether College Gameday will be in Pittsburgh or not.

Dan_P:

Mike did a pretty good job of summarizing the game overall, so I won’t go into much detail here.

Pitt looked good overall in their win today. While they got off to a rocky start, the Panthers seemed to get back onto track after the first quarter. Aside from a few mistakes, the defense looked pretty solid. Stull and company appeared to get rolling as the game went on. Pitt didn’t seem to want to throw down field much early on, but they managed to put up 234 passing yards by the end of the game. In the end, it wasn’t exactly how I pictured it, but my 38-0 prediction was pretty close.

This win was key to getting the Panthers ready for next week. Notre Dame is going to come into next week ready to play after being upset today. Mike will have more on that upset as well as the other key upsets today and how they affect Pitt. Look for that article to be posted later today.
